BACKGROUND

Do It Right! Learn the Appropriate First-aid for Snakebites.

Introduction to the First Aid Course for Snakebites (FACS)

The First Aid Course for Snakebites (FACS) is a specialized public outreach program designed and conducted by the Remote Envenomation Consultancy Services (RECS) in collaboration with Malaysian Society on Toxinology (MST) and various institutions, societies and organizations. FACS is managed by TOXED Sdn Bhd and is tailored to increase the awareness and empower general public on the effective and timely first aid for snakebite and related injuries.

The primary goal of FACS is to raise awareness about venomous snake species in Malaysia and their potential dangers. The course emphasizes the importance of delivering proper first aid immediately after a snakebite while avoiding harmful interventions that may worsen the situation before the patient reaches medical care. This initiative addresses widespread misconceptions, misinformation, and inappropriate practices often observed among the Malaysian public and even some healthcare responders. Additionally, FACS promotes safe and appropriate health-seeking behaviors when dealing with snakebite and related injuries.

Objectives / Learning Outcomes

  1. Develop awareness of venomous snake species in Malaysia.
  2. Understand the steps to take immediately after a snakebite.
  3. Acquire skills to administer appropriate first aid for snakebite victims.
  4. Learn the critical information to communicate upon the patient's arrival at a hospital.
  5. Gain insights into what occurs during the medical management of a snakebite at the hospital.

FACS equips participants with practical knowledge and skills to effectively handle snakebite emergencies, ensuring better outcomes and reducing complications.
